Two Terraces, West London

Two Terraces is a project that focuses on the thoughtful redesign of a pair of roof terraces in an urban setting. The redesign of these terraces was envisioned to promote wellness, allowing our client to enjoy more time outside whilst in the city.

The project was delivered by a 3-way transatlantic operation between ourselves, Schiller Projects in New York and Weber Industries in South London.

The pavilion itself, located on the first terrace, was crafted by steam bending individual oak petals to create a self-supporting canopy. The form of the canopy responds to wind, sunlight and rain patterns on the terrace to increase all year round usability. Each petal has been uniquely fabricated from a standard timber sheet, utilising a single curved mould for cost efficiency and minimal waste. This process resulted in unlimited possibilities for differentiation between the petals.

A separate top floor terrace has been designed to facilitate family dining, featuring a large concrete table with an integrated brass backgammon board for the keen game players in the household. Raised planters have been incorporated around the perimeter of the terrace to increase privacy. Unique but subtle lighting, referencing the form of the petals on the terrace below, has been integrated into the planters and table top to increase usability throughout the evening.

The project was completed in Summer 2020.
